Practical tip: portals are most useful when you plan them around your daily loops. Put one near your storage/crafting area and use the other as a “work portal” you move around while you build, mine, or explore, so you’re always one hop away from home. Also, because it’s easy to get reckless when movement is fast, keep food and a backup plan on you—portals make travel quicker, but they don’t stop you from making a bad choice and ending up in trouble.
