The Reeker (Experiment) Mod drops a brand-new kind of encounter into your world: the Reeker isn’t just “spawn, chase, fight.” It’s described as a curious creature that often starts by stalking you to observe, deciding if you’re an ally or an enemy. It spawns in forests (including jungles), its spawn rate is based on levels, and it’s a progressive entity, so it’s meant to feel like something you learn over time. The addon also says it doesn’t need experimental, but it’s still in early stages, so bugs and future updates are part of the deal.
Combat-wise, the Reeker’s damage changes depending on its behavior. Running deals 5, swimming deals 6, crouching deals 3, and walking deals 2, with 2 being equal to one heart (and it also depends on your armor). The creator notes it “should be killable now,” and there’s also a higher chance for the Reeker to approach when you’re trying to befriend it, which matters because this isn’t a creature you just rush at and expect to control. It can swim and break blocks too, so it’s not locked into one predictable path when it decides to show up.
The big brain part of The Reeker (Experiment) Mod is the hidden Threat Level. The Reeker dislikes players wearing heavy or powerful equipment, and it even counts gear in your inventory (like having two iron swords still matters). Threat Level is influenced by gears and kills, and it gets especially angry if animals are killed, including villagers, animals, and especially babies. The mod also gives you warning signs through butterflies that show up around “reeking smells.” Yellow butterflies mean you’re safe, and as your threat level rises the colors shift through green (stalks more), orange (might attack), purple (appears more often), and red (you’re considered an enemy). If you’re trying to survive clean, the practical move is to keep your loadout sensible instead of hoarding extra weapons in your pockets, and avoid turning peaceful areas into a slaughter zone if you don’t want the Reeker acting like you’re the problem.
When stalking gets serious, the Reeker has specific behaviors you have to respect. Sometimes you need to stare at it, but whenever music plays, you’re told not to look at it—hide or look away instead. It can also sneak up behind players slowly, and if it gets close it attacks, but looking at it immediately can make it flee. On top of that, there’s an infestation mechanic: when it flees, there’s a chance it affects the surroundings with reeking blocks infested with abnormal worms, and breaking those blocks can spawn worms, but they can also contain useful items, sometimes even a diamond. The addon includes tools for dealing with this: a Mold Cleanser crafted with copper and a glass bottle that cleanses a whole 50m area and reduces infection chances, and a Bug Sprayer that can kill worms and release a sweet scent for a few seconds that also stuns the Reeker. For players who want the “maybe we’re friends?” route, the best trust window is when it sits down to rest: you slowly approach holding exactly 30 blueberries in your main hand, don’t switch items, don’t attack, and don’t right-click—just wait for it to make the first move. It may push you away and take the berries at first, and even if it gives you something back, it doesn’t guarantee you’re fully safe. New players also get a book for custom settings, but only the world creator or someone with the (op) tag can access them, and the addon recommends default or Hard for a better survival experience, plus using a headset/headphones to properly hear the effects.
